Hard water problems
Let us first look at the hard water problems
Hard water contains calcium carbonate which makes it hard - together with some other hardness minerals. This causes many issues when the water is mixed with soap products or is heated.
Hard water deposits are evident in the kettle, on taps, in the shower or bathroom.
Not only is this a cosmetic problem but scaling of pipes and hot water systems can eventually cause restricted flows - or - blockages.
Appliances suffer with hard water increasing repairs and maintenance, plumbing requires attention when it gets too bad.
It is commonly known that in an average hard water area scale will form 1.6 mm - or 1/16" per year when the water is heated in the home. Another consideration is that 70 kg of potential hard water scale will enter your home throughout the course of a year, (average household, average water hardness).
When hard water minerals mix with soap products they form a scum. This scum will show itself in the bathroom visually. BUT did you realize that it will attach itself to your skin which at the very least will give people a sense of dry skin or in more severe situations will aggravate Eczema, psoriasis and some other skin complaints. Softened water does provide real financial savings by reducing the need for maintenance and replacement of hot water systems, dishwashers, washing machines and showers by extending their life.

Soft water improves the efficiency of hot water heating. A typical household heater will grow limescale at 1.6mm per year that in turn reduces the efficiency of the water system by 12%, 3.2mm in two years is 25% inefficiency. Softened will gently remove scale deposits returning the hot water heating system to near optimum performance.

Many of our customers only use a teaspoon of washing powder in the washing machine, no calgon, no fabric conditioner. Dishwashers often do not require salt or rinse aid. Toilet soap, shampoo, conditioners are also reduced.

Hard water minerals react with soap products to cause scum. You normally see scum around the basin, shower and bath. This scum is a sticky deposit that not only sticks to the sanitary ware but on your body when you bath, it even sticks on the fibres of the laundry.
Skin will also have a layer of this soap scum after washing with hard water and soap products. People frequently complain of dry skin and as a consequence will use moisturising creams or moisturising ointments. After bathing with hard water a large number of people will suffer dry itchy skin.
Soap manufacturers add lots of additional chemicals to attempt to combat these problems.
Using softened water and soap will leave your skin softer, silkier and feeling that the moisturiser has already been used. Using less soap to clean the skin also appears to benefit people who suffer from eczema, psoriasis and perhaps as relief to the condition of skin cancer - see letter from one of our customers.
Skin care of babies, who typically will have a more delicate skin, can be more readily irritated by excessive use of soaps and detergents. Using softened water reduces their use. Razor rash is reduced with soft water as the razor blades glide easier on the face, also extending the life of the razor blade.
Softer healthier skin is a common comment made by people using soft water to wash with; some even say that their complexion improves to make themselves look younger.
