Today we are sharing some important information regarding "forever chemicals" (PFAS) in drinking water sources across the UK, as recently highlighted by the BBC.

Water companies have been ordered to address concerning levels of PFAS in the drinking water sources for over six million people. These persistent pollutants, used in many everyday products, accumulate in the environment, and some have been linked to serious illnesses, including an increased risk of certain cancers.

The Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) has issued 23 enforcement notices due to elevated PFAS levels that could "constitute a potential danger to human health." Since 2021, water companies have been required to test for 47 concerning PFAS compounds. Out of 1.7 million tests conducted in the last four years, at least 9,432 recorded PFAS levels above the 0.01µg/L threshold. While the DWI states that water remains safe because companies are required to take action, this process can be lengthy.

Environmental charities and the Royal Society of Chemistry are advocating for stricter, legally binding UK guidelines, as current limits are 2.5 times higher than those in the US. Removing PFAS is challenging with conventional treatment infrastructure, and while technologies like nanofiltration exist, they come with high costs and energy demands.

At Pure Choice, we emphasize the importance of using Reverse Osmosis (RO) water filters as a highly effective and economical option for clean, safe drinking water at home. We recommend installing a quality drinking water filter, such as Kinetico Bolt 1000, at your home or business, which can remove up to 95-99% of contaminants, microplastics, bacteria, chlorine, and lead from tap water. A dedicated drinking water filter tap in your kitchen offers convenient access to purified water.
